people from voting. that's for the republicans. most people out here, i assume, are probably democratic voters. >> reporter: the voting days and hours have been extended since two days were lost while hurricane sandy blue through here that may account for some of the huge turnout. over in montgomery county, we stopped by the civic center in downtown silver spring. the lines were not quite as long but voters are seizing the moment to do their civic duty. >> i think it's convenient for people to get it done ahead of time. i can't speak for other people but for me, one less thing to do next tuesday. >> at the maryland community center, we asked voters if they thought that hurricane sandy had anything to do with the numbers that we are seeing. >> before the storm, i would have said it was the storm. now, i guess people just want to make sure that they have an opportunity, you know, to get in and voice their opinion. >> reporter: and there are some controversial issues on the

ballot gambling in maryland. i think that was really confusion because there are so many people speaking for and so many people speaking against. it's hard to know which is the right direction to go. >> same sex marriage. >> definitely have an opinion and voted my belief. >> reporter: and the dream act, the immigration. >> oh, absolutely, i support that 100%. so i was happy to be able to vote on that. >> reporter: there have been so many people here in prince george's county. the lines have been so long. they had police on hand to handle the crowd and the traffic in the parking lot. in pew, karen gray houston, fox 5 news. >> early voting also resumed today in the district. the board of elections is now extending voting hours from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. through saturday at each early voting site. they have added extra voting equipment at each location, also reminding voters if you find long lines at the early voting center in your home ward, can you vote at any early voting site throughout the city.

earlier, we showed you president obama's visit to new jersey to tour the damage in the area. just a few days until the election, his rival, mitt romney headed south to reunite his campaign. he held packed rallies from the gulf coast to the coast. he asked supporters to help hurricane victims while also promising change. >> in seven days, the nace will come together. the election will be over in sean days and the nation will come together. >> both candidates expected to use the last few days in swing states with romney planning to hold his last rally monday night in new hampshire. >> on his way up to new hampshire, sounds like he's going to spend a good amount of time in pennsylvania, at least spending money there. >> reporter: pennsylvania is supposed to be a lock for president obama. the last time a republican won was 1988. but they elected pat toomey to

the senate in 2010, elected a republican governor, 12 of the last 20 seats in the house are republican and they feel they have a shot and want to expand the electoral map with 20 electoral votes. they think they can do well in affluent suburban, philadelphia and even take a shot in allegheny county which has not gone republican since 1972 >> can't be good news for the obama campaign? >> no, it is not good news for the obama campaign. they are defending seats. all these battleground states that we are talking about, you know, he won pennsylvania by 681,000 votes, 10% points. he should be trying, the president, expanding rather than defending but all they care about is winning at least by one vote to get all the electoral votes in that state. >> in 2000, i was in florida in

west palm beach watching as they counted hanging chads. won't be quite as bad this time in ohio but ohio is a mess. >> ohio, i just don't see how you and i are going to be able and the rest of fox 5 to talk about a result. the reason why is because the secretary of state has sid said for the very first time absentee ballot possibilities to all 7 million voters and the people that requested them and then decide not to actually send in an absentee ballot will have to cast a provisional ballot on election day and those ballots which will be hundreds of thousands of them, will not be counted until ten days after the election. so i don't think we're going to be able to determine which way ohio went after all this conversation about ohio. >> and lastly, 20 seconds here, a bit of levity from the obama campaign, talk being shaving

the native of laurel has played poker professionally for five years the redskins have called this week's game a must-win. the redskins are 3-5. just three teams in the past ten years have opened up with the same record and made the playoffs. there is a sense of urgency to do it. the team practiced in the bubble. deangelo hall is still awaiting word from the nfl to see if he will be suspended. all in all, the team in good spirits. with the steelers' loss behind them and attention turned toward halloween, of course. >> i enjoy halloween. i'll scare some kids, too. i like to do that.

tonight. it wasn't bad. >> my husband said we had more kids this year than last year. i took that as a good sign. i just can't believe that tomorrow is november. >> i know. >> that got here so fast, didn't it? >> tomorrow is also going to feats our a lofts clouds. there will be a few more sunny breaks than today. they are still doing cleanup in west virginia. snow is actually just beginning to shut off there. three days worst of snow, el elkins, west virginia. look at the snow there. there are places that will be out electricity and phone service for maybe another week. the three-foot totals coming out of west virginia has been unbelievable. this heavy wet snow also drifted and mate it tougher to measurement it is come patting every day but closer in maryland, frostburg got about 6 inches of snow.

bayard, west virginia, 22 inches of snow and big meadows, virginia, 12 inches. we see a little bit of snow here in the ridge tops but even west virginia is starting to settle down and what's left of the circulation of sandy still trapped here behind this broad trough. can't move out pause of the same thing that blocked it before is still, there an area of high pressure. the high pressure will slowly move out of the way in the next couple of days and this will move out. that does not mean that we'll warm up but we'll brighten up. it will get much blighter for the weekend. temperatures today, only 55 degrees, considerably below average for this time of the year but that's what we would expect in the wake of that big storm. buffalo, 45 degrees and cincinnati at 44. when we look back to our south and west, some hope that there is still warm air on the weather map. denver, 70. denver has to be the most interesting place to live. their temperatures up and down all the time.

new orleans, 80 degrees. perhaps we'll have a few more warm days here before we get into the heart of our colder weather season. our temperature tonight, though, at 10:00, 51 degrees. in the suburbs, we are already down into the 40s. we will have a cool night, chilly night although with the clouds not breaking up too much, we can't describe it as cold, just chilly, upper 30s for most places. manassas, the low temperatures tonight. culpeper can that's where you will be as well. haggerstown about 40. district here about 39 degrees, annapolis, 41. a chilly start again for your thursday morning. we have to keep this cool pocket around with the clouds and kind of a damp feeling because our trough is still here with high pressure blocking it. between thursday and friday, it will weaken quite a bit and as the jet stream ridges down the north, it won't necessarily feel a lot warmer but it will be a lot unier and that's a good chance to rake those leaves, put those bags over to the curb. the forecast tonight for the

man swiel. >> thanks so much for joining us tonight at 10:00. here is brian now with the news edge at 11:00. love, revenge, and pipe bombs. three key ingredients as the manhunt continues at this hour in virginia. police are looking for a man who they believe tried to kill two police officers by posting pipe bombs. >> reporter: we are talking about a man accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and then tried to kill a deputy and a detective using bombs. the atf says they were made to kill and they were absolutely capable of doing that for the first time in virginia history, police have activated what's called a blue alert, a special kind of search for suspects who threaten police officers. here is the suspect, 25-year-

old loren stewart. he is accused of making pipe bombs and blowing up victims' homes. he caused significant damage yesterday morning. police consider him armed and dangerous and they are doing everything they can to get him in custody. >> this man is a serious and dangerous threat to society. he already attempted to murder two law enforcement officers, their families and citizens. >> take another look at lawrence stewart. he was last seen in a red hyundaiing a accident with virginia plates, wxa 8249: he may also be, according to police n a white any san altima with pennsylvania plates. hlm 1923. again, hlm 1923. if you have any information on his whereabouts, you are asked to call the stafford county police department. halloween has certain traditions in the district.

above reveals more of the damage. millions more remain in the dark. >> that's a catastrophe. that's going to take a long time to recover from it >> reporter: in some areas, they were able to begin to clean up as people emerge. crews are pumping water out of flooded dwellings as residents are throwing out items from their home. >> i grew up in pant. >> a total of 6 million people without power mostly in new york and new jersey. limited transportation services are causing headaches for those trying to get back to work. traffic in and out sifty heavy as most trains are still down with the mayor placing limits on drivers. >> you have to have three people in the car. i know it is inconvenience for a lofts people but the bottom line is that the streets can only handling so much. >> across the river in new jersey, national guard troops are coming to the aid of more than 20,000 people still stranded in their homes in hoboken where water is starting

many crew members are -- two crew members are still lost at sea. let's check with sue palka. >> because of an area of high pressure, the low fresh sure has not been able to get out. we continue to get a little bit of wet snow in the mountains but that is winding down. certainly the big winds are gone, too. reremain in the krily air that that area of low pressure left us in. temperatures in the district 49 degrees, not too many places at or above 50 degrees. we are finding some 30s up there. but at least warm enough that we are not seeing the precipitation falling in the

and ohio. they say they chose mitt romney on the stuff screen but the machine automatically selected president obama instead. two counties recalibrated their machine. county officials say there are usually some kinks to work out but they believe that the problems have been set. and we have a list of best and worst candies for your kids' teeth. >> you may have noticed some changes in the gas pump because of super storm sandy. number 5, gas stations will be allowed to sell lower quality gasoline instead of that cleaner burning gas required by the clean air act. that's because sandy could make it harder to distribute gasoline. the waiver is in effect in d.c., maryland, virginia and 12 other states the belt which way express lanes in virginia could open early. drivers could start using those lanes as early as november 17th. the two new lanes run in each direction between the springfield interchange to just

with a little bit of a break there it more clouds than sun tomorrow. we'll get a few more peaks of sun back in it as well. we thank our brilliant editor dave but butz for setting up that camera this is a small issue but something that you need to be a i wear of. our local streams increase. even though they are coming down, they are still high. moderate flooding still expected across part of the potomac through tomorrow afternoon. we are talk being d.c. as well as alexandria. better than yesterday when we were running three to four feet. now we are down to a foot and a half to two and a half feet above normal during times of high tide. tomorrow, the next high tide washington channel at 10:26 and alexandria at 10:4:44. water will be high for another time after that. and then after that, water will be out of

monocacy doing better. we showed you some pictures of that earlier in fredericksburg. a lot of water at that these streams and creeks had to process out of super storm sandy which is seeing a little bit of light rain and mountain snow. mostly clouds for us. there could be a very, very spotty shower out to our west or maybe a patch of drizzle. there could be a good cloud deck overall. this pattern is going to break down and there is certainly plenty of sunshine everywhere else as soon as you get out of the midwest and through the central plains. another frontal boundary coming to the west coast. we may see a little bit of that rain in here on sunday night into sunday in the form of some showers. but otherwise, i think we're going to have mostly dry days which we need. our temperatures right now, 49 degrees. lots of mid-40s on the weather map, 45 for winchester, 46 for martinsburg, leonard town at 45 degrees. we'll describe it as chilly

overnight and we'll keep this cool air bass we talked about because of the atmospheric road block not allowing this pressure to lift up. that's why we have lots of clouds and sun. temperatures in the 50s until we break this down and it's going to take a day and a half or two days to do that. a few more breaks and sunny for the week, nice bright skies, temperature still in the mid- to upper 50s, a little bit of a breeze on saturday and maybe friday. a very good feel of fall in the air for you. future cast showing you an idea of when we may get the clouds kicked out of here. we may see a little snow depicted in the mountains. more clouds than sun but some sunny breaks. look tim tomorrow night, you might see some of that sunshine breaking out in the potomac high land. it may clear out just a lull bit so that perhaps friday will feature a bit more sunshine than clouds. a chance of upflow in the appalachian but as we go

through friday afternoon, again, looking like sunshine coming on in. notice the frontal boundaries that he showed you on the west coast starting to show up here through friday evening. forecast for tonight, 42 degrees in the city. a lot of clouds. upper 30s in the swush so definitely a chilly start for the kids tomorrow. again, more sun than clouds in the afternoon but a lot of clouds on balance for the day. we'll take any sun that we can get at this point, give you a little bit of hope for november 1st, 42 at 8:00 in the morning. by noon, about 52 and by 5:00, 54 degrees with more sunshine starting to enter the equation. 22 for quantico the high. maybe 53 for leonard town. 55 for d.c. and still some 40s as we head out to the north and west in haggerstown, 48 and 46 degrees for couple better
